Finding the Right Lawyer for You...
- Write down all important events and dates so that you can give the lawyer as much information about your situation as possible. This will help the lawyer understand how they can best assist you.
- Organize all relevant documents and bring them to the first meeting. Keep a folder of court documents, letters between parties, financial records, and so on. The lawyer may want to review some of these materials before agreeing to take your case.
- Write down any questions you have so that you do not forget to ask them. You may have questions about your legal matter and, also, about how the lawyer will bill for their time when working on your file.
- Although it is strongly encouraged that you to speak one-on-one with the lawyer, some clients feel more comfortable with a friend or relative, or an interpreter, joining them for the first meeting. If you plan to have someone join you, please let us know in advance.
Following these suggestions will help ensure that you have a productive first meeting with the lawyer, either in person at our office or by videoconference, and that your lawyer-client relationship is off to a good start.
